February Meeting: Crinoline

A most unusual meeting for us this month! Imagine the city of Bath at the turn of the eighteenth century bustling with the rich and not-so-rich wanting to see and be seen...

Mrs Kitty Woodcock - with the aid of her maid - prepares to meet her cousin, Captain Swayne (dressed by his batman) of the Wiltshire militia, for a promenade through the fashionable Georgian streets.

He cuts a dash in his military uniform, ready to serve his country in the Napoleonic Wars, while she wears her fashionable ‘chemise’ dress, with her Spencer and bonnet to keep the cold at bay. The models were dressed before our eyes, from their undergarments outwards, in outfits which are accurate copies of original museum objects from around 1800. The construction and purpose of each item was explained as the dressing progressed plus there was time for questions for those who wanted to know more. A fascinating evening, and whilst the costumes were wonderful to behold. we're quite relieved dressing isn't quite so complicated these days! Elsewhere this month, the Book Club enjoyed Gill Paul's The Secret Wife (7.5 out of 10), the Crafty Crew found quilling was an easy paper craft to learn, and the Unofficial Supper Club had their first Thai Taste.
