The WI Inspectors at Pewsham Belles Annual Meeting 2018

Other WIs beware and quake in your boots. The 'WI Inspectors' are on the prowl and yours may be found wanting, just like Pewsham Belles was last Thursday. Penelope, Winifred and Hilda, swept unannounced into our Annual Meeting (AM), and declared the lack of a tablecloth and flowers most unsatisfactory which they rectified immediately. A list of our misdemeanors was read out, mainly of our meetings considered not up to standard, and suggestions made for improvement so that our WI could operate 'the way it has always been done'. History of tea towels or matchstick models anyone? Finally our most heinous crime was declared in shocked tones: the lack of Jam and Jerusalem. Jars of strawberry jam were duly distributed round the room, which we clutched to our chests whilst singing Jerusalem. We only lasted the first verse. It was a brilliant start to our AM, with the 'Inspectors' finally revealed as our Treasurer and Secretary all dressed up for a plan and script by our outgoing President and designed to poke some gentle fun at ourselves and the WI. Formal business was then swiftly completed, more on your new committee anon. The evening was rounded off on the theme of 'The WI with a Twist', with cocktails and mocktails served instead of jam and tea (recipe leaflet here), a mini Jerusalem quiz, and guess the mystery cake ingredients. The cakes were declared delicious and we were surprised at the inclusion of avocado, beetroot, mashed potato and tomato soup! Elsewhere this month, our new Flexi-club was launched, our first foray into daytime gatherings. It's so successful the group has met twice already! The idea is for anyone to organise a gathering to explore coffee, tea, breakfast etc. on offer in Chippenham, at a time which suits the organiser. There is no set date or day on this one, and Fiona Plant has taken up the baton to organise the next in April. The Theatre Group battled through the snow for a rewarding evening with George Egg, the DIY Chef; the Book Club reviewed The Mysterious Affair at Styles; and Our Town decided on their programme for the next few months with their 'Extraordinary Women' project.
