Another great evening with the book club ladies, where we discussed The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead and had very mixed reviews. Some found the book hard to engage with, both because of the subject matter and the writing style. Scores ranged from 3 to 8 out of 10 giving an average of 5.5. Even those who rated the book more highly said they found it a difficult read, and scored it based on raising their knowledge of a difficult and cruel aspect of America's history. The photograph at the top of this post is of a house which was used in the real Underground Railroad in Virginia. Escaped slaves were hidden in a small space under the house. The next read is quite different - look out for details of our Reading Challenge!
