A paintalong with the Quirky Bird

The delightful Lynn Barrow aka the Quirky Bird joined us for February's main meeting to guide us through three of her designs. Her story is a positive Covid one, having had to be repatriated back to the UK when her job as a tour guide left her and her party stranded in Morocco last year. Back in the UK with no work for the foreseeable future, she turned to painting to occupy her time and as a mindful activity.

Her paintings struck a chord with many, particularly WIs up and down the country (she is herself a member of Let's Make Jam WI) and she has found a new role delivering paintalong classes as well as a 'club' of loyal followers on Facebook eager to devour her latest tutorials. She's popular and in demand, so Pewsham Belles were delighted to acquire her services for our very own paintalong. The evening went down very well with our Belles - we do love a good workshop!

Lynn had a very soothing manner as she guided us through each painting; elegant ladies, a Quirky Bird of our own, plus an Easter themed floral wreath. Everything is doable under her gentle guidance and everyone achieved good results whether they used Lynn's preferred watercolours or by the use of crayons or felt pens.

We've since learned Lynn has had to cancel her more recent classes owing to illness and we wish her well for a swift recovery. In the meantime, here's Lynn's website which links to her Facebook and YouTube sites with plenty of tutorials and fun to keep you going.

Elsewhere this month Book Club discussed Haven't They Grown with mixed reviews and we revealed the flowers doing well in our gardens in the darkest days of winter. Several members enjoyed the first weekend of Chippenham's virtual Fringe February as well as the museum's talk called Postcard from Chippenham., where we were surprised to see Chippenham had its own version of the more familiar saucy style of seaside postcard and Birds Marsh Wood depicted as a destination for a leisurely stroll in full Edwardian costume. Finally in the wider WI, members enjoyed some of the activities and talks provided by Wiltshire Federation, and our own Lockdown Life magazine featured on Wiltshire WI's website, WI Life's Twitter account, and NFWI's Facebook page!
