We were delighted to welcome back Chippenham's Sahara Sisters for some much anticipated Bollywood dancing at January's main meeting. We first met them for a belly dancing session in our early days, and it's great to know they have other dancing strings to their bow!
The evening started with a demonstration of the dance 'Jai Ho', familiar to many from the film 'Slumdog Millionaire', which was the first song and dance crossover from Bollywood to Hollywood. Some of the Belles also know it well from Zumba Gold sessions with Sheila.
Rachel from the Sisters explained many of the moves and expressions in Bollywood dance have precise meanings and often tell a story, so they are keen to ensure their dancing is as accurate as when they're first taught them by a Bollywood dance expert.
Then it was our turn to dance! A few of the hand movements were explained first, with the 'bird' and 'flowerpot' hand movements demonstrated before we started. Rachel made sure we got them right too! Then we added the feet which was a whole new ball game! Lots of moves later and we'd learned the first 30 seconds of Ed Sheeran's 'The Shape of You'.
That took quite a while, so we had a rest to watch the Sisters dance the whole song, followed by an Indian version of 'Pretty Woman'.
The evening simply whizzed by and confirmed our chance to dance Bollywood style was well worth the wait. It's been on our Must-do list since the Belles started! It was fabulous to see everyone join in and enjoy themselves.
Later Rachel posted this lovely message on the Chippenham News and Notice Board's Facebook Page:
"We had a wonderful evening with the Pewsham Belles WI group tonight, leading a Bollywood workshop. We got every single one of them up and dancing with us, and really appreciated the fabulous, welcoming atmosphere and the whole group's willingness to give the dancing a go!
Visits like this are a hugely enjoyable part of being a Sahara Sister, and well done to all of our girls who went along."
Hurrah!
