Adventures of the Yorkshire Shepherdess

Forays into the non-fiction genre are rare at book club, so it was good to see Amanda Owen's third book as this month's choice. She's now a familiar face to many owing to the various series about her life and family on the farm via Channel 5, so how did her writing fare?

Well, for those who came to the Flying Monk, or emailed in their thoughts, it was a mixed review. Many felt it may have been a series of articles that had been put together and lost some of it’s flow. The other comment was that the headings would have worked better if done as dates/ year in the life on the farm. The Yorkshire dialect was difficult for some and there was repetition.

On the good side this book was an easy read and the description of the area and children’s activities in a more natural environment was enjoyable. We liked the photos and it's worth looking at those she regularly posts on Twitter. Some of us would have liked to have read one of the earlier books which follows her journey into becoming a shepherdess*.

We scored this one 6.25.

Our next book is "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley and we'll meet on Tuesday 12th October at the Flying Monk.

* = it looks like at least the first 2 books were ghost written.
