Escape from Chippenham

It was back to Zoom this month with our virtual world transformed into an Escape Room with the prospect of leaving Chippenham as our reward from solving the room's puzzles!

Michelle set the scene. The Belles, trapped in a COVID-19 environment had heard about the possibility to escape to a virus-free place if the could give the correct information to their WI Wanderers contact. It would mean a trip around Chippenham to solve 4 puzzles hidden around Our Town.

The first seemed simple: find the four-digit number from the years shown in the photographs from the Market Place, but which number to select from each year and in what order to place them – perhaps not so simple after all.

The second puzzle took us down the High Street and tested our memories of the colours of the rainbow. Easy? Perhaps not, when one of the clues given suggested pink rather than red. But the puzzle was solved and we advanced to the Railway Station for the third challenge of the evening.

Code words within a text formed the third puzzle, giving us valuable instructions for our

safety and a rendezvous by the river. The final test required a map and knowledge of Chippenham's open spaces to allow the solvers to identify the code word which would finally allow us to make our great escape.

All the Belles were safely transported to a sunny desert island which naturally led to a discussion about luxury items to take with us and potential locations. The clever selection of a 5* hotel and the presence of a butler meant that none of our chosen luxuries (chocolate, crisps, music, a comfortable bed, good books and tea bags) would be off limits!

Carolyn added extra drama to the evening by one of her shelves crashing down. At the time it looked like she'd been set on fire to the rest of the Belles. Thankfully, all was well apart from books and craft items needing to be reclaimed and tidied up, plus the little matter of needing to repair the wall!

Elsewhere this month the Happy Hookers chose a hot day to make beanie hats and snowflakes, whilst Dinah led the Walkie Talkies on one of Corsham's Heritage Trails. The book club reviewed Jane Harper's "Force of Nature" via a new way... conducted by Facebook Messenger!

Photographs of our sunflowers continued to be popular with many of them in flower and reaching 9,10, or 12 feet! Sadly storm Francis towards the end of the month bought some of them crashing down. Watch this space for instructions for saving seed for next year.
