Diane Setterfield's "Once Upon a River" sparked a lively discussion last night with some book club readers loving its haunting, folkloric scope and others finding it hard to get into with too many characters. Diane S summed up her liking of the book as follows:
"I really enjoyed reading this book, I was hooked in the first chapter. I liked the way the story was told by different characters, with them all intertwining. My one criticism would be the last chapter where the threads were brought together a little too neatly. The bad characters getting their comeuppence, and the good thriving - not really true to life! But all together an enjoyable, interesting read. I would give it 9/10." A bit of a 'Marmite' read this one, with many members still to read or finish their copy. Of those who had finished it, the scores ranged from 5 to 9 out of 10, which averaged out at 7. August's read is Jane Harper's "Force of Nature", and we'll meet on Tuesday, August 11th, venue TBA.
