We were joined at our monthly meeting in October by Sinead Deedigan of Sion Health and Fitness who took us through some moves to help keep us safe when we're out and about.
Sinead's is a martial arts and fitness instructor and a very engaging speaker.
This practical session was lots of fun whilst providing us with some really useful tips for keeping safe when out and about.
Her top tips included:
Always walk with a purpose (e.g. look up not down) and be constantly aware of your surroundings. A potential attacker will always go for someone who looks the most vulnerable
Avoid wearing headphones (or just use one bud maximum) as these will distract you and you may not hear someone approaching
If you need to use a walking stick, remember this can be used to your advantage (as can an umbrella!)
If a stranger approaches and speaks, keep your distance, put your hands out in front of you to maximise your distance and ask "What do you want?"
Reverse into a parking space and have your keys ready well before you get to your car. This allows for a quicker get away if needed. Also have your keys out well before getting to your front door
A grip can be broken by quickly pulling up or pushing down
