Many of you asked to grow sunflowers again this year after last year's lockdown growing, so who were we to deny you? Not your committee... who managed to 'acquire' the requisite number of seed packets to distribute to everyone courtesy of Morrisons' 'Seeds of Hope' campaign earlier this year.
This time there were slugs to defeat and a cooler summer to contend with, so it's been wonderful to see your sunny blooms over the past few weeks. No tallest sunflower to view this time, though it was heartening to see so many blooms exceeded the 2 foot height as given on the seed packet. Can you spot the usurper in the above collage? Yes, the 'sunflower' on the right in the middle isn't one we've grown, but an incredible cupcake Carolyne received as a present!
We also had a new pesky pest to contend with, as shown by Diane S...
..."I was just starting to enjoy the sunflower faces, when Cyril the squirrel struck!!"
On a brighter note, our sunflowers also continued to inspire our members in their arts and crafts. Here's Michelle's cross-stitch and Sarah's painting, the latter inspired by those grown by Maud Heath's Causeway last year. Theirs were much later this year too!
