The Foundling

Book Club were pleased to find The Flying Monk has reopened again on Tuesdays in time for them to review Stacey Hall's The Foundling. On the whole everyone found it a pleasant easy read, plus they enjoyed Susan's fairy tale recap and Fiona's character assessments.

A couple of readers were intrigued by the shrimp hat central to the tale and found Hogarth's portrait via Google and that it had inspired the author's main character, Bess. Whilst everyone agreed Stacey Halls is a good writer, they disagreed with the cover's marketing statement that she's 'The new Hilary Mantel'.

We scored a very respectable 7 out of 10.

The next read is Neil Gaiman's The Ocean at the End of the Lane, which we'll meet to review at The Flying Monk on Tuesday, March 8th.
