July's Book Club read was a trip into the fantasy world of Erin Morgenstern's 'The Night Circus', a magical world where two magicians Celia and Marco strive to outdo each other in a competition to the death.
Some of our readers enjoyed this tale very much, liking the completeness and inventiveness of the author's vision. Others saw little point in the central theme and found the narrative unengaging. It was definitely one for the Marmite Award with at least 5 people who did not finish. However it still managed a fairly respectable 6.3 out of 10.
A lively discussion ensued on how to bring Book Club out into the post lockdown world. Wendy has kindly offered to host at her house for August, where we can be well spaced in the garden. Fingers crossed for good weather! After that we will be looking for a more central and permanent venue where we can safely meet indoors.
The next read is Alice Walker's 'The Color Purple' and we'll meet on Tuesday, 10th August.
