Flowers for the Jubilee

The Happy Hookers had a brilliant afternoon at Gill's recently with plenty of tea/coffee, biscuits and the odd one or two red, white and blue flowers they've made. These will help decorate the balcony at Seymour House care home ready for their Jubilee party next month. In just 3 short weeks they've managed to make an amazing 160 flowers of all kinds of shapes, sizes and colour combinations with more still to come.

If you're wondering about two almost identical photos, Wendy had to leave before Ann arrived. The photo of Seymour House shows where the flowers will be located in the balcony area. We hope to see photos from there once the decorations are up. We're told the residents have made some flower pot kings and queens!

Each contributor chose patterns they liked the look of and whatever combination of red, white and blue yarn they wanted to use for each flower. This gave us a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colour combinations. We're indebted to Kay whose recent donation helped with the white and blue yarn needed. As usual Poundland was plundered for other yarn!

Favourite pattern discoveries included:

  • A simple sunflower pattern for beginners Pauline found on YouTube (which also helped Michelle to at last crack the Magic Circle conundrum - yay!)

  • The playlist from the same YouTuber has a great floral coaster suitable as a larger make. It looks like other patterns on this playlist have been used - it has lots of great flower and stitch options to try

  • Kanzashi flower video tutorial - Wendy found this a simple make; Michelle still can't see where she went wrong, but still made a presentable flower!

  • The pattern for a summer daisy garland shared by Sarah

  • A large sunflower pattern

  • An even bigger sunflower - the pattern's author says it's suitable for yarnbombing!

Favourite books with flower patterns include 100 Flowers to Knit and Crochet plus Emma Leith's Mindful Crochet.
