Last month's beanie hat make turned into an ongoing project for September with various embellishments added, followed by a Zoom session earlier this month to make a matching scarf. This came in the form of a stylish cowl, with the new skill of making buttonholes now mastered by our Happy Hookers. Where to find the buttons needed for a stylish finish became a hot topic for discussion which resulted in surprise confessions of owning a button box by many, sometimes inherited from mums, mother-in-laws or grandmothers.
As well as making (or buying) pom poms for the beanie hats, Pauline inspired Michelle to make a contrasting flower for her beanie hat instead of the pom pom she originally intended to make. Michelle found an easy YouTube video for a nice, quick make. As she has yet to master the magic ring, she chained 3 to form the initial loop instead.
Gill found a great video tutorial for the button-through cowl scarf, particularly good for showing how easy it is to crochet the button hole. As the tutorial showed a different stitch to that used for the beanie hat, she kindly adapted the pattern so we could produce a matching scarf as follows:
BUTTONED SCARF (NB stitch notation is American)
Chunky yarn - use a 9mm hook, make a slip knot and chain 61
Aran yarn - use a 5mm hook, make a slip knot and chain 113
NB All stitches are into the back of the loop to create the same ribbed effect as the beanie hat.
Row 1: HDC into 3rd chain from hook. HDC to end of row, chain 2 and turn
Row 2: HDC into the back of the 1st loop and HDC to end of row, chain 2 and turn
Row 3: HDC into the back of the 1st loop, chain 1, then HDC Into back loop of third stitch (this makes button hole). HDC to end of row, chain 2 and turn
Row 4, 5 & 6: HDC to end, chain 2 and turn
Repeat button holes on rows 7, 11, (15 for Aran) and repeat rows 4-6 for rows 8-10 (and 12-14 for Aran).
After last button hole row do a last row of HDC - row 12 for Chunky and row 16 for Aran
You should have 4 button holes for Aran and 3 for Chunky.
Michelle found she had to adjust her Aran make down to 103 stitches as 113 was too loose for her. She also ran out of wool and ended up making her scarf three times as she was just a few stitches short on her 16th row. In the end she followed Gill's advice and started her final scarf with a row of single crochet which did the trick. Next month's makes will be Christmas trees and snowflakes - Christmas is coming!
