Tricky cupcakes

As well as the ones we enjoyed at February's main meeting, the Happy Hookers also had cupcakes on their menu this month in the form of a funky pincushion. These proved to be a little more tricky in the making because there were a couple of new techniques to try: front post crochet and the creation of loops on a crochet round for the insertion of another piece of crochet i.e. put the "icing" on the "cake".

Although tricky, some reasonable results were obtained, not all of them necessarily by following the pattern! The top part was fairly straightforward and we riffed our own ideas for the formation of the cupcake case, Michelle had to make more rows on the case so the cake would fit (caused by using different kinds of yarn), and some sewed rather than crocheted the pieces together so it looked more like the cake fitted into the case.

If we made this again, we'd probably try the much simpler rib technique we used to make our beanie hats instead of the front post one, or perhaps a basketweave or similar stitch style instead for the cake case. For these kind of makes, we've found a cotton mix for the yarn is the most successful as it gives a better definition.
